Sew-in hair extensions differ from clip-in extensions that allow you to remove them and care for your hair. Because your hair is tucked beneath the weave, you have to take additional steps to protect your hair and still maintain the desired hair style. Here are some tips to keep in mind for caring for your sew-in hair extensions and natural hair.

Deep Condition Your Hair

A sew-in hair weave can put a lot of stress on your hair. It also leaves your hair more likely to dry out, which can result in breakage. Regardless of how long you plan to wear the hair extensions, you need to deep condition your hair before having the extensions installed.

When looking for a deep conditioner, pay close attention to the ingredients. Conditioners that have water as the first ingredient are better for your hair than one that contains alcohol, as alcohol dries out your hair.

Use a Net

Weaving nets have a few purposes, but most importantly, it helps to protect your natural hair. Instead of the extensions being sewn directly onto your hair, the stylist can sew them onto the net. Use silk thread instead of cotton thread to secure the net to your hair. Cotton tends to absorb moisture, which could help dry out your hair.

A weaving net also helps with the pattern of your hair. When the hair is sewn onto the cornrows, the way the hair can be styled is limited. By contrast, a weaving net does not affect the placement of the extensions.

Wash Your Hair on a Regular Basis

Some people shy away from washing their hair extensions on a regular basis for fear that the hair will become too tangled. Even if you are using synthetic hair extensions, you still can wash the hair without fear of it horribly tangling.

To wash the hair, part it into four quadrants. Fill a spray bottle with a shampoo, conditioner, and water rinse and apply the solution to your hair. Massage the solution through the hair as you normally would. When you are ready to rinse the solution from your hair, do it one quadrant at a time and start at the back. As you finish, use clips to secure each quadrant.

You can use a hooded dryer to ensure that not only the hair extensions are dry, but your natural hair is also. Apply a water-based moisturizer to your hair and carefully comb it from tip to root to detangle it.
