You've decided to color your hair for the first time. You've chosen the perfect color. Now you want to make sure it lasts as long as possible. Unfortunately, without proper care, your new hair color can fade faster than it has to. Luckily, there are some steps you can take that will help keep your new color looking vibrant longer. Here are three tips that will help prevent premature fading.

Deep Condition

The trick to lasting color begins long before you go to your colorist. To help extend the life of your color treatment, you should schedule your appointment at least one week in advance. This will give you the opportunity to deep condition your hair before your appointment. Deep conditioning your hair before coloring will help the color grab hold to your hair. The conditioning treatment will also help protect your hair from the chemicals used during the coloring process.

Leave the Natural Oils

You may be tempted to wash your hair before you head to the colorist, but you shouldn't. Your hair needs those natural oils to help protect against damage. The oils from your scalp penetrate the hair follicles and act like an extra conditioning treatment for your hair. Stop washing your hair a couple of days before you head to the colorist. The natural oils will protect the hair shaft during the coloring process and will help prevent early fading of your new hair color.

Protect Against Sun and Chlorine Damage

Like your skin, your hair can be damaged by sun and chlorine exposure. After you've colored your hair, you'll need to provide protection from damage. You should wear a hat whenever you go out in the sun. It's also a good idea for you to use a conditioner that provides UV protection. If you'll be swimming in a pool or hot tub, you should protect your hair from chlorine damage. Deep condition your hair before going swimming. Once you're out of the pool, be sure to rinse your hair thoroughly with clear water. The water will remove the chlorine residue and help keep your color from fading.

Now that you've decided to color your hair for the first time, you want to make sure it stays beautiful. Use the tips provided above to help keep the color vibrant and prevent premature fading.
